Introduction to the Mass

Dear brothers and sisters! The Church chose the first day of the year to celebrate the Mother of God to honor her as the Queen of time, a new time of grace. Through her, God came to inaugurate the time of salvation as promised after the first sin. She and the Jewish people prayed day and night for the Savior to come soon… And humanity began a new page of history when she said “Yes”, God became incarnate in her womb, she became the Mother of God from that moment. Today, the first day of the new year, we do not forget to take a moment of silence to thank God for the graces we received in the old year. Together with Mary, we offer God a new year of peace and prosperity, and together we sincerely ask God to forgive our mistakes and shortcomings in the old year.

Entrance chant

Hail to the Holy Mother, who gave birth to the King, who rules the universe forever and ever.

Collect

Almighty God, on the day when the Virgin Mary gave birth to the Savior, you gave to humanity the treasure of eternal salvation. Grant that through her intercession we may receive the source of eternal life, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. He is God who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

“They will call on my name over the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”

From the book of Numbers.

The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron and his sons and say to them, ‘Bless the people of Israel. Say to them: “The Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord show you His face to you and have mercy on you. May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.’ They will call upon My name over the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

That is the word of the Lord.

Chant: Praise him, all you peoples; praise him, O Lord, all you peoples! May God bless us, and let all the ends of the earth fear him.

Second Reading : Gal 4:4-7

“God sent his Son, born of a woman.”

Excerpt from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians.

When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. For this reason God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba!” So you are no longer a servant but a son; and if a son, then also an heir through God.

That is the word of the Lord.

Alleluia : Hebrews 1:1-2

Alleluia, alleluia! – In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son. – Alleluia.

Gospel : Luke 2, 16-21

“They found Mary and Joseph and the baby… and eight days later his name was called Jesus.”

The Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke.

The shepherds went with haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw him, they understood what had been told them about this child. And all who heard him were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

But Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.

When eight days were completed, the time for circumcision was fulfilled, and he was named Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

That is the word of the Lord.
