Introduction to the Mass

Dear brothers and sisters! The First Sunday of Advent opens the new liturgical year. “Advent has two characteristics: it is a season of preparation for the solemnity of Christmas, in which the first coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered; and it is a season in which, through this remembrance, the faithful turn their hearts and minds to look forward to Christ’s second coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is considered a season of fervent and joyful expectation (AC.39). Beginning with Advent, a special time of waiting for the Lord’s coming, the Church uses the Word of God to invite all believers to be vigilant and to pray, to progress more in their lives of faith, hope, and charity, in anticipation of the day when Christ will come again in glory.

The expectation only has real meaning and value when we know how to listen to the Church’s call to repent of all sins and mistakes. Therefore, let us together ask God to forgive us and we ourselves know how to forgive each other, so that the Mass we are about to celebrate will be accepted by God.

Entrance chant

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; in you I trust; let me not be put to shame. Let not my enemies rejoice over me, for none who hope in you shall be put to shame.

Do not recite the Gloria

Collect

Almighty Father, grant that we may always be determined to do good, so that we may welcome your Son who comes to judge the world. Thus you will place us at your right hand and call us to the joys of heaven. You are God, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

First Reading : Jer 33:14-16

“I will raise up for David a righteous Branch.”

From the book of the prophet Jeremiah.

Thus says the Lord: The days are coming when I will fulfill the good news I proclaimed to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he will execute judgment and justice in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will live securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord our Righteousness.”

That is the word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 24:4bc-5ab. 8-9. 10 and 14

Response: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul (v. 1b).

Chant: Show me your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation.

Chant: The Lord is merciful and righteous; therefore he teaches sinners the way. He guides the humble in righteousness and teaches the humble his way.

Chant: All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his commandments. The Lord is intimate with those who fear him, and he makes known to them the words of his covenant.

Second Reading : 1 Thess 3:12 – 4:2

“May the Lord make your hearts bold at the coming of Christ.”

Excerpt from the First Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians.

Dearly beloved, may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we also do for you, so that your hearts may be established blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all the saints. Amen.

Dear friends, I urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you have learned from us how you should live and please God, as you are living, do so more and more. For you know the instructions we gave you in the Lord Jesus.

That is the word of the Lord.

Alleluia : Ps 84:8

Alleluia, alleluia! – Lord, show us your mercy and grant us your salvation. – Alleluia.

Gospel : Luke 21, 25-28, 34-36

“Your salvation is near.”

The Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke.

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; on the earth nations will be in anguish, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves; people will be terrified and expectant of what is coming on the world, for the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.

Be on your guard, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will come on you suddenly like a trap and will come on all who live on the face of the earth. Be on the watch at all times, praying that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

That is the word of the Lord.

Prayer of the Faithful

OwnerDear brothers and sisters! Jesus invites us to be vigilant and prayerful, awaiting the day when he will come again in glory. In a spirit of prayer, let us offer up these prayers to God:

1. “The Lord will give you strength and holiness.” Let us pray to God for the pastors in the Church to always be steadfast in following God’s call, to practice and proclaim the Gospel of God to all people.

2. “I will cause a righteous Branch to grow up for David.” Let us pray to God that all peoples of the world may recognize Christ as the Righteous One whom God has given to humanity, so that all may be saved through faith.

3. “Be watchful and pray always.” Let us pray to God for dry and lukewarm Christians to diligently receive the sacraments and persevere in prayer, so as to live worthy of their calling as children of God.

4. “May God make your love for one another and for everyone grow stronger and stronger.” Let us pray to God that each person in our community will know how to love one another, so that everyone will recognize us as true disciples of the Holy Master.

Celebrant: Lord Jesus, you came into the world to save us. Teach us to be vigilant and to pray, so that we may be united with you each day. You live and reign forever and ever.
