Opening of the Holy Door at Arop, Corpus Christi Church

Arop, Papua New Guinea – April 28, 2025
On Sunday, April 28, 2025, Parish Priest Fr. George Ayikade CSSp, assisted by Fr. Phillip Pangolo OFM, presided over a remarkable celebration at Corpus Christi Church, Arop, marking two significant events:

  1. The Divine Mercy Feast, and
  2. The Opening of the Holy Door.

The spirit of the Jubilee Year and the profound meaning of the Holy Door were powerfully expressed throughout the celebrations. The faithful gathered with extraordinary enthusiasm and readiness, creating a deeply spirit-filled atmosphere during the Eucharistic celebration.

The event was part of a two-day program, with participants arriving a day early to settle in. Many traveled long distances — by boat, car, and canoe — while others from nearby parishes walked for hours to reach Arop.

Among those present were Catholic teachers, students, community and church leaders, youth, children, and many devoted Catholic faithful. On Saturday, April 26, Fr. George instructed the participants on the “Eleven Conditions” for obtaining a Plenary or Partial Indulgence through the Holy Door. He emphasized that to pass through the Holy Door, one must sincerely repent and receive the Sacrament of Confession to be freed from the eternal punishment of sin, according to God’s mercy.

During the preparatory talk on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” Fr. George captivated his listeners with wisdom and clarity. Meanwhile, Fr. Phillip was available at the churchyard to hear confessions as people responded to the call for repentance.

The climax of the celebration came early Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m., with a joyful Eucharistic Thanksgiving Mass. Fr. George served as the main celebrant, assisted by Fr. Phillip. The Mass was made even more vibrant by the beautiful singing of the choir and traditional dances led by the youth and local villagers. The entire congregation was overwhelmed with joy, making the celebration a truly unforgettable and grace-filled experience.
